Summary
The Fulwell Ward Initiative is a 36-month strategic partnership between North East Sport and Friends of Fulwell. At its heart is the dedicated Fulwell Ranger, a professional role designed to transform our local environment from the ground up. By moving beyond reactive litter picks to proactive maintenance—such as pathway clearance, graffiti removal, and seasonal planting—we are creating a safer, more vibrant community for everyone.
Engaging Our Young People
North East Sport has long been a beacon for youth development in Sunderland, and this project scales that mission to new heights. We aren’t just cleaning streets; we are building pathways for the next generation.
Skill Building: Through our partnership with local schools like Monkwearmouth Academy, young people engage in hands-on environmental stewardship, learning the value of hard work and community ownership.
Positive Role Models: The Ranger acts as a visible mentor, showing young residents that they have the power to shape their own surroundings.
Youth-Led Action: By participating in community clean-ups, young people shift from being “users” of public space to “protectors” of it, fostering deep-rooted pride and deterring anti-social behavior.
Environmental Impact
Our work is data-driven and visible. We focus on key “hotspots” to ensure the most significant impact where residents need it most:
Waste Management: Regular “hotspot” litter picks and major community clean-up events ensure our fields and parks remain usable.
Green Space Restoration: Intensive work is focused on Cut Throat Dene and Seaburn Recreation Park, clearing overgrown pathways and refurbishing street furniture to restore community access.
Volunteer Power: We bridge the gap between local passion and corporate resources, coordinating volunteers from major employers like Barclays, Siemens, and Nissan to tackle large-scale projects.
Community Voice: “The Ranger provides a single, reliable point of contact. Residents see swift, tangible action, and it makes us all proud of our local community”.
Why This Matters Now
In these challenging times, our public spaces are our greatest assets for mental and physical wellbeing. The Fulwell Ranger programme ensures these spaces are not just maintained, but celebrated. By empowering residents and young people to take the lead, we are building a more resilient, self-sufficient, and connected Fulwell.
