NORTH EAST SPORT

Objective

North East Sport is a not-for-profit social enterprise with the ambition of making a positive difference by providing access to sport. Working in deprived areas across Sunderland, we aim to give as many people as possible the opportunity to play sports and be active, regardless of ability and background.

About Us

North East Sport was established in 2009 in the Southwick area of Sunderland by Peter Curtis.  We now provide PE classes, football coaching, wraparound school clubs and school holiday camps, making a positive difference by providing access to sport for hundreds of people in the Sunderland region.

We are an FA Charter Standard Development Club (affiliation number T-DUR2125) and use qualified instructors on all the sessions we offer.

What we offer

PE in Schools

We provide curriculum PE classes for five schools in Sunderland: English Martyrs’ R.C. Primary; St. John Bosco R.C. Primary; Hasting Hill Academy; St. Patrick’s R.C. Primary; and Town End Academy.

Covering Reception to Year 6, these classes enable children to experience a broad range of sports including hockey, rugby and basketball, as well as movement and sequence skills for the younger children.

Breakfast, lunchtime and after schools clubs

We provide before, during and after school clubs for 4 to 11 year olds in a number of schools across Sunderland.

Our aim is to ensure these sessions are as active as possible, providing sports activities, games, multi-sports and sports leadership sessions.

Football Coaching

Our football club has around 400 members across 30 teams, ranging from age 3 up to an adult team.

Based at Monkwearmouth School, the teams for children aged 6+ compete in the Russell Foster Tyne & Wear Youth League. Those aged 3 to 6 are part of the Development Club, with a focus on developing football skills before progressing to the team environment.

All of the teams are run by our qualified coaches, and the club is accredited with the Football Association’s quality mark.

School holiday camps

We run a number of different camps for children to provide access to fun and physically-active sessions during school holidays.

Our summer beach camps, which are run in conjunction with Sunderland City Council, are activity-driven courses aimed at children who are less sport-orientated, and are held on the seafront at Seaburn and Roker. The camps are run by staff with level 3 beach practitioner qualifications, and give children the opportunity to experience a range of interesting and engaging activities including rock pooling, shelter building, craft sessions and sandcastle building.

We also run holiday football camps at Monkwearmouth school for children, which run through all school holidays other than Christmas.

Community engagement - Friends of Fulwell

Supporting and engaging with our local community is an important part of what we do at North East Sport.  With the support of Sunderland City Council, we set up Friends of Fulwell, a charity focused on improving the local environment, building community spirit and encouraging local volunteering.

Having started in the summer of 2017, Friends of Fulwell has successfully secured funding for at least two years and has built a substantial social media presence.  In addition to encouraging volunteering for people to help improve the local environment in Fulwell, we also arrange regular sessions in the library where representatives from the council, police, local businesses and community groups can come together and meet the public to discuss local issues and help to drive positive changes.

Testimonials

I had 2 boys on for football camp one aged 4 and one aged 7 they both really enjoyed it and looked forward to coming every week. All the staff were fantastic and very friendly. My youngest can be a bit if a handful but the staff were great with him and had loads of patience.  My eldest went to beach camp for one day and he loved it. Unfortunately, he could only go to beach camp one day but if it is on next time i know he will definitely want to go.The holiday clubs were great for us and amazing value.  I would also like to say how great Peter was, on a couple of occasions i forgot to book the boys on and asked him at short notice if there was space and he always said yes.I will definitely use the holiday clubs again. Thank you for for helping my kids have a great time.

North East Sport is a great company with excellent, professional staff and a real understanding of the needs of a school.  Activities are delivered to a very high standard, ensuring the children get a lot of enjoyment from them.  The coaches are punctual, well organised and have built up an excellent rapport with both children and staff. They have high expectations for behaviour and are always keen to do all that they can to meet the schools needs.  We would not hesitate to recommend North East Sport to anyone looking for first class coaching.
